“Before, we felt like a caged birds – alive, but not free. The Street Child World Cup gave us hope. It showed us we can fly.” – Young refugee participant, Street Child World Cup 2022
This World Refugee Day, June 20th, we stand in solidarity with millions of children and young people forced to flee their homes in search of safety, dignity, and a chance at a better life. At Street Child United, we believe that no child should be defined by their status as a refugee – they should be celebrated for their courage, their dreams, and their right to be heard.
Over the years, we have had the privilege of welcoming refugee teams to the Street Child World Cup, powerful reminders of the resilience and potential of young people who have faced unimaginable challenges. From Bosnia and Herzegovina, Palestine, Sudan, Syria Forum, and Hungary, these teams brought with them not only football skills and cultural pride, but also urgent stories that deserve global attention.
Each young person who takes part in our events is more than a statistic – they are artists, athletes, leaders, and advocates. When refugee teams take the pitch at the Street Child World Cup, they are doing more than playing a game. They are demanding a world where every child, regardless of background, has the right to protection, education, and opportunity.
In past tournaments, refugee players have spoken bravely about the discrimination and isolation they’ve faced and about their hopes for change. Through football and art, they’ve found connection, confidence, and a global stage to share their truth.
This World Refugee Day, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring every young refugee is seen, heard, and supported. We call on the world to listen to their voices, amplify their dreams, and act with urgency to protect their rights.
To the young refugees who have joined our journey: thank you. Your stories continue to inspire us, and we are proud to stand with you — not just today, but every day.
